As the world becomes more interconnected, English becomes increasingly important as a tool for global communication. When you enroll in the UCT English Language Centre, you join an international community of students who, like you, have chosen to expand their cultural, academic and professional horizons by learning English with the top University in Africa – the University of Cape Town.
The UCT English Language Centre offers a wide range of English Language courses, including conversational English, business English, and preparation courses for the IELTS (International English Language Test System), TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), FCE (First Certificate in English) or CAE (Certificate in Advanced English) exams. You can start your course on any Monday and study for any number of weeks.
Our English for Academic Purposes (EAP) programme is designed for students who need to use English in a University context, and covers topics including essay writing, giving presentations and dealing with academic texts.
Located in the vibrant, academically diverse Faculty of Humanities at UCT, the English Language Centre is at the hub of creativity and excitement. As a UCT student, you will be able to participate in university life and culture and to take part in social activities, sports clubs and other societies.
All teachers are highly qualified and experienced and we pride ourselves in upholding the high academic standards of the University of Cape Town.
Our General English courses are ideal if you use English for everyday purposes. We offer year-round general English courses for all levels, from Elementary to Advanced, starting every Monday. With courses ranging from 20 to 30 lessons a week, we have a course to suit different budgets, daily schedules and language learning needs.
This course is ideal for you if you mainly need to use English at work or in a business environment. It takes place in the afternoon and is combined with a 20 lesson morning General English course. The course will cover a range of business and work related topics, including speaking in meetings, giving presentations, negotiating, email and report writing, networking, making decisions and many more. As with all our courses, you and your classmates will be able to negotiate the content with your teacher so it fits your specific Business English needs.
After studying General English in the morning, you will be able to choose from a range of electives in the afternoon, to allow you to focus on the English skills that you most want to improve.
These courses are designed to prepare you for the IELTS and TOEFL academic English exams, with focused training in exam strategies and techniques to allow you to maximise your potential and achieve the grade you need.
The IELTS and TOEFL exams are requirements for degree study at many English-speaking universities, including UCT. They are also used for immigration purposes and for professional accreditation.
These courses run all year round and exams can be taken at regular intervals at a local test centre. Courses can be combined with General English afternoon electives. Please note that these courses are subject to availability, and you need to be at least Upper-Intermediate level to join the course.
The English for Academic Purposes, EAP, course is a non-credit bearing course open to all UCT post- and undergraduate students who wish to improve their level of academic English Language. There are two available courses: (i) Reading and writing, and (ii) Speaking and Listening. Each course is comprised of a weekly two hour workshop, and students may take one or both courses. The courses are open to both South African in international students.
