Description

CBEI is situated on the entire 4th floor at 1130 West Pender Street, in downtown Vancouver's business, tourism and cultural district.

Within a ten-minute walk from CBEI are parks (including famous Stanley Park), beaches, art galleries, public libraries, sports and events stadiums, fitness facilities, community centres, theatres, shopping and many restaurants and cafés.

CBEI has been recently renovated and facilities are bright, spacious and modern. Amenities include 11 classrooms, a boardroom, and a student kitchen with microwaves, coffee and snack vending machines.

While most students bring their lunches to school to eat in the lounge, there is also a café and convenience store in the building, and a back courtyard. Also just one block from CBEI is a beautiful oceanfront park, where students can eat their lunches during warmer months.

The CBEI computer lab has free high-speed internet and email access, word processing and presentation software, and programs that help students practice their English. CBEI also has wireless internet access in classrooms, for students who have laptop computers.

There is also a resource room, and students can borrow extra study materials through their teachers.

CBEI was the first school in Canada to specialize in Business English. The English for Work and Business (EWB) Program is designed for professionals, business people and university students. This program includes 25 hours per week of intensive instruction. Certificate and Diploma programs are available. Students in this program take three classes each day: Business Oral Skills, Business Writing, and Business Concepts. Although the program uses topics from work and business, the main focus is English.

Business Oral Skills You will learn a variety of work and business communication skills (meetings, interviews, presentations, telephone calls, negotiations, etc.) and use them with confidence and accuracy. You will also improve your English pronunciation and oral fluency, public speaking and presentation. Your class speeches will be videotaped for review and faster learning.

Business Writing You will learn to write clearly and accurately for all types of work and business communication (letters, faxes, email, memos, resumes, reports, etc.). You will also improve your grammar and your business English vocabulary. You will use a computer lab for your work and assignments

Business Concepts You will explore various work and business related concepts (marketing, finance, management, international trade, globalization, etc.), and review the principles of business, cultural differences in international communication, and the use of idiomatic expressions. You will also work on individual and group projects, give presentations, go on business field trips, and work on practical case studies.

The EWB program is available to students ages 19+, and is offered at the intermediate, upper-intermediate and advanced levels.

Students who study at the advanced level can apply to do an internship.

Accommodation & Homestay

CBEI offers assistance with accommodation to all students registered with the Institute. While Vancouver offers different types of accommodation for students, the most popular accommodation is homestay, especially with students who are new to Vancouver. All prices quoted here are in Canadian dollars.

Homestay Accommodation CBEI recommends homestay accommodation to most students, especially for the first two months staying in Vancouver. Staying in homestay is a good way to practice your English, and also gives you support while you get to know the city. It is also the most cost-effective accommodation option, especially in the summer (which is peak tourist season). CBEI has worked with the same homestay placement company for 12 years, and many families have hosted CBEI students for several years. You will be placed in a family according to your preferences. The homestay program is guaranteed - if you don't like your homestay for any reason, and you tell us in the first week, you can change homestay immediately without charge.

There are a variety of homestay options you can choose from. All options include a private room, laundry and local telephone calls. Homestay fees are:

Standard room with full-board (3 meals a day) and shared bath: $720 per 4 weeks. Standard Room with half-board (2 meals a day) and shared bath: $680 per 4 weeks.

Executive Room with full-board and private bath: $850 per 4 weeks.

Executive Room with half-board and private bath: $800 per 4 weeks.

Economy Room with no meals and shared bath: $520 per 4 weeks

Placement Fee: $200.

Optional airport pick-up and drop-off are $75 each way. Extra days available at daily rates.

Bed & Breakfast (B&B) If you are not staying with a Canadian family, we recommend that you stay for the first three or four days in a small hotel or pension (called in Vancouver "Bed and Breakfast"). We can suggest options and you can choose which one suits you best.

Prices for B&B range from $100 to $150 per day. Small hotels are available from $150 to $200 per day (summer prices may be higher). Placement fee is $200. Student Residences Student residences are available for monthly rentals from September to April. Residences are available as single rooms with private or shared bath. Meals are not included.

Residence prices are: from $600 to $900 per month. One month's rent deposit is required in advance. Placement fee is $200. Apartments Both furnished and unfurnished apartments are available. Our apartment coordinator can find a furnished apartment for you in the downtown area, close to the school. These apartments are comfortable and secure, and some have swimming pools and exercise rooms. The coordinator can pick you up at the airport.

Furnished apartment prices: $ 1,200 - $2,000 per month. Also required are: security deposit of 50% plus 1 month rent. Placement fee: $200.

Unfurnished apartments: Unfurnished apartments are also available, but you will need to find it yourself after you arrive. Prices range from $ 800 to $1,500 per month. Shared Accommodation Once you have been in Vancouver for a while, and know other international or Canadian students, you might be able to arrange shared accommodation (two or more students rent an apartment and share the expenses).

Price of your share: could vary from $300 to $600 per month, depending on the size of the apartment and the area. Usually the first and last month's rent is required in advance. (Apartment placement by CBEI is not available; students must make their own arrangements.) CBEI can arrange airport pick-up for students.
