Located within the BCIT downtown campus, Newton College Vancouver is in the heart of Vancouver. The location offers students opportunities to experience the natural wonders of BC and the convenience of nearby cultural venues and shopping centres.
Overview
Newton College Vancouver’s English Language Program comprises five levels of proficiency. Based on the English Placement Examination results, students are placed in their appropriate level. In each level, students take five courses: speaking, listening, reading, writing, and grammar. These courses total 10 hours of instruction per week and are supplemented by additional hours of English for Specific Purposes (i.e. Specialized English Courses and English Communication Courses). Student scheduling is flexible and takes into consideration the students’ academic goals.
Key Advantages:
• Structured learning that is also flexible, giving students the chance to prove themselves through challenge tests and move forward at their own pace.
• Proven to be effective as an alternative to the TOEFL examination: o Statistics have shown that international students who have completed NCV’s ELP Program are more likely to experience academic success in their university studies than other proof of proficiency tests.
• Specifically defined tasks for each course and level set clear objectives for students: o For example, in level 3 listening, students are required to identify the main idea and supporting details presented in an audio recording, and in levels 4 and 5 listening, students study different methods of taking notes while listening to formal speech (e.g. news reports and academic lectures).
• Curriculum is focused on preparing students for long-term success in an English-speaking environment, as well as in a Canadian academic setting – students study to learn the language and culture, rather than studying to pass a standardized exam.
