Connecticut enjoys a temperate-zone climate with variable weather conditions. Hartford, the capital of Connecticut, is the fourth largest U.S. financial services center and is known as the "insurance capital of the world". The major business centers of Boston and New York are about two hours from the University.
The English Language Institute of the University of Hartford has provided intensive language instruction to international students from a wide variety of countries for over twenty years. The ELI offers various levels of instruction, a state-of-the-art language laboratory, a multi-media center for computer-assisted classes and enrichment opportunities through our cultural activities. Courses are taught by qualified instructors who hold advanced degrees in the field and who have many years of experience teaching English as a second language. We offer courses for fifteen weeks in the fall and spring semesters. During the summer there are two, 6-week sessions. Business English and Advanced Communication courses are offered in the evenings. During the academic year, students in the advanced level are automatically enrolled in the Academic Challenge program. This consists of one university course incorporated into the ELI curriculum and is taken for credit.
The ELI is recognized by the American Association of Intensive English Programs, an organization that promotes quality in English language programs. The English Language Institute follows and supports the standards and principles of other professional organizations such as Teachers of English to Speakers of Other languages (TESOL), NAFSA: An Organization of International Educators, the Institute of International Education (IIE) and the European Association of International Education (EAIE).
During the summer months, on-campus housing is available. During the academic year, housing is very difficult.
