The University of Texas at El Paso is located on the U.S.-Mexico border in El Paso, Texas, a city of more than 650,000 people. Shielded by mountains on three sides, the dual cities of El Paso and Ciudad Juarez are rewarded with more than 200 days of sunshine annually and a dry climate, making it possible to enjoy most outdoor activities year-round. In addition, there are nearby recreational centers in southern New Mexico. The border city culture that exists in El Paso makes UTEP a safe and familiar environment for international students. The English Language Institute, a part of the Division of Professional and Continuing Education at The University of Texas at El Paso, is specifically designed to help learners gain functional command of English in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The Program operates to meet a number of student goals:(1) To pass the TOEFL and to have a successful academic experience in an American institution of higher learning;(2) To use English in business and other vocational pursuits; and(3) To satisfy language and cultural needs for social interaction with English speakers. Courses during the fall, spring, and summer meet for intensive eight-week sessions to help students learn English in the shortest possible time. In each eight-week session, classes meet five hours a day, Monday thru Thursday in spring and fall, and Monday thru Friday in the summer. Listening comprehension, reading/writing, grammar, conversation, and study of American culture patterns will be stressed.
