We are located in a small town that is friendly and safe. The state of Oregon has no sales tax, so cost of living is lower. Monmouth is host to Western Oregon University, and ELCI students are welcome to use their facilities. We are 15 minutes away from the state capitol, one hour from Portland, and one hour from the coast.
The ELCI provides a variety of English language and culture programs for students of all ages. Our intensive language program offers English training all year round. Our learner-centered, interactive curriculum includes instruction in listening, speaking, reading, writing, and grammar. Currently, we offer three levels: beginning, intermediate, and advanced. We tailor our intensive program according to the academic needs of the students. We offer a TOEFL course for those on the university track, high school preparation courses for those on the high school track, and GED for high school completion. Not only do we offer intensive English courses but also we provide summer programs. We have a Head Start for High School program which is an 8-week program that includes instruction in high school subjects, i.e., math, science, U.S. history, social studies, and American culture. While teaching content, the students are given opportunities to study key concepts and vocabulary necessary to function in the American high school class.Next, we have short cultural programs. These entail groups from various countries taking theme-based English classes in the morning and going on excursions in the afternoons (or all day). In the past, our students have done mini-presentations, team-building exercises, writing activities, etc. The excursions included trips to an aviation museum, Silver Falls, beaches, and more.Lastly, we offer internship and volunteer placement. These placements range from working at a local hardware store, beauty salons, schools, and veterinarian clinics. This option is great for those who want to gain work experience and build a resume.
