SHSU English Language Institute (ELI) The ELI is designed to prepare non-native English speaking students to become proficient in English. The ELI teaches English through compassionate classroom instruction and exciting out of classroom learning opportunities.

Upon completion of the ELI program, students will demonstrate the English proficiency necessary to succeed in academic programs and will have conditional admission to SHSU undergraduate programs and many graduate programs.

The ELI assists students in their cultural adjustment through a professional, respectful, and supportive environment.

The English Language Institute at Sam Houston State University features:

• Conditional admissions to all undergraduate and many graduate programs • Affordable academic 8-week intensive English Language Program- $2,800 for an 8-week session. • English for Academic Purposes- English instruction highlighting reading, writing and vocabulary • Communication classes: listening, speaking, vocabulary, and pronunciation • Additional instruction in college success skills including note taking, test taking, career exploration, and more. • Blended learning program emphasizing excellent classroom instruction with online support • Dedicated and caring ESL instructors with master’s or doctoral degrees • 5 levels – Upper Beginning, Intermediate, Upper Intermediate, Advanced, University Transition Level
