Description
The Center for Intensive English studies (CIES) was established in 1980 at Florida State University. Dedicated to maintaining a "small school environment, " CIES's Intensive English program enrolls a maximum of 150 students in its 24-hour-per-week English curriculum, with an emphasis on university-level English preparation. CIES is a recognized leader in international language education, dedicated to providing students with a "personal" and professional learning environment and to maintaining the highest standards for English language teaching.
Florida State University and CIES are located in Tallahassee, Florida's capital city and center of government and education. Tallahassee is a safe, clean city located in the beautiful northwestern part of the state, known for its year-round excellent climate. The Gulf of Mexico and its beaches are one hour away by car, and Miami, Orlando, Tampa,and Atlanta are only 1 hour away by air.

Foundations, Elementary, Intermediate and Advanced (pre-university) levels of English instruction are offered each session. All new students are given a placement test during Orientation and placed in the appropriate level for each individual English skill (Grammar, Composition, Reading, Speaking, and Listening).
• Six (6) sessions per year • Each session is 7 weeks long • 24 hours of English instruction per week • Classes are from 9:00am until 2:50pm Monday - Thursday and until 12:30pm on Fridays • Optional TOEFL test preparation classes are offered • Small class size for more personalized instruction • Instructors have their master’s or PhD in Teaching English as a Second Language • You must have completed high school or be 18 years or older to attend CIES

Student Services
We offer weekly student activities, a conversation partner program, tutoring, and optional TOEFL preparation classes for FREE. We also provide all textbooks, coffee, and tea to the students at no additional cost. We are happy to assist students with finding housing, transportation, health insurance, and other necessities. CIES students have access to the university's library and recreational resources, new computers, free WiFi, and numerous social activities/field trips.
Additional Services
Florida State University may offer conditional admission for students who are academically qualified for admission to degree programs but have not yet met the requirements for English proficiency. Conditional admits to FSU study at CIES until they meet the English language requirement for university admissions. CIES's Academic Liaison also works closely with the university's academic departments and helps hard-working CIES students apply to FSU.

ESL and EFL teacher training. CIES hosts special credit and non-credit programs for foreign teachers of English, combining advanced English and EFL Methodology.
