The ELI is located @UF. Students take 23 hours of classes per week and may also enroll in electives like TOEFL/IELTS prep, Business English, Grammar for Writing, and Advanced Informal English. The Cultural Immersion Program (CIP) is like no other in the USA. Complete (C) and brief (B) sessions are offered in the academic year and in the summer. Fall C and Spring C are 16 weeks; Fall B and Spring B are 7 or 8 weeks in length. Summer C is 14 weeks long, while Summer B is six weeks in length. Students are placed in levels for each skill upon arrival. Students take 23 contact hours of classes per week and may also enroll in additional electives like TOEFL iBT, Business English, or Grammar for Writing.
The mission of the Intensive English Program is to prepare international students for studies in colleges and universities in the USA. In our intensive classes students learn to do college-level reading assignments, write appropriate papers and exams, take good clear notes at lectures, take objective tests that are timed, and establish productive relations with fellow students and professors by learning about U.S. culture.
The ELI provides two scholarships for returning students. Highly competitive, the scholarships are decided by a committee of teachers and administrators. Students are welcome to submit their writing to Student Voices, an ELI publication. Students can compete for prizes with their fiction, non-fiction, poetry, academic essays, etc.
The ELI offers an array of activities. It is an integral part of the program and focuses on providing opportunities for oral practice. The Cultural Immersion Program comprises five programs (English Interaction, Daily Sports, Weekend Trips, Volunteering in the Community, and Conversation Partners), and is described in detail on our Web page. Integrated Curriculum. Reading and writing classes are totally integrated. Listening and speaking skills classes are divided into formal and informal instruction. The formal portion is taught by an ELI Instructor. The informal instruction is with two Language Assistants, who are typically undergraduate University of Florida students. Full-Time Student Life Coordinator. Orientation for daily (housing, insurance) or academic needs is provided.
Like most U of Florida students, intensive English students are housed in apartments located in private complexes designed for students. Most international students prefer to prepare their meals in their apartments.
