Southern Illinois University at Carbondale is located in Carbondale, Illinois, a college town of 30,000 people approximately 100 miles southeast of St. Louis, Missouri. We are near the Shawnee National Forest, a very beautiful part of the state of Illinois.
Regular sessions are 8 weeks long and include 25-30 hours of classroom, tutoring, and language media center instruction per week in the full intensive program depending on level. Two six-week terms are offered in the summer. The six-week term offers one hour more per day than the eight-week term. CESL has six levels of instruction, plus a course for graduate students: General English I (Beginner), General English II (Low intermediate), Advanced English I (Intermediate), Advanced English II (High Intermediate), English for Academic Purposes II (Advanced). Graduate Student English (GSE) is open to students who have completed the regular full-time program and are entering graduate school. Additional language training is provided for International Teaching Assistants holding graduate assistantships in the university.
Housing is arranged for our students based on their requests. Most students stay in off-campus dormitories adjacent to the campus or in on-campus dorms. Off-campus apartments are also available and affordable.
