Rutgers University is located in central New Jersey, adjacent to safe multiethnic residential areas and close to theaters, concert halls, museums and other cultural resources. Travel time to New York City is less than one hour, to Philadelphia about one hour, to Washington, D.C. about four hours.
Classes meet during the day in seven-week sessions (two sessions in each semester, Fall & Spring, and one in Summer) with vacation periods in between sessions. New students are accepted at the beginning of any session. Full-time study consists of 20 class hours a week and includes instruction in reading, writing, grammatical structure, vocabulary building, pronunciation and discussion. Advanced students also study American film, literature and current events, and at the highest level, TOEFL Preparation. Each student's program includes academic instruction and supervised language lab practice at the appropriate learning level. Eight levels of instruction are offered: two beginning, two intermediate, two high intermediate, two advanced. New students are tested for placement one week before classes begin.
PALS arranges Rutgers dormitory rooms when they are available, usually at the beginning of each semester and in summer. In addition, Rutgers maintains lists of local rental rooms and apartments through its Office of Off-Campus Housing. Housing plans should be finalized before classes begin.
