English Language Programs
The Intensive English Language Institute at the University of Texas at Tyler offers a full range of intensive English classes to prepare students for entrance into American universities. We also offer special programs for short-term study experiences and professional development as well as exchange programs.
Academic English
The intensive academic English program consists of 7 levels, beginning to advanced. There are five 8-week sessions in one year: 2 fall, 2 spring, 1 summer. Students may enter the program in August, October, January, or June.
Courses
Students in the academic program take core courses in Listening & Speaking; Reading; Writing; and Grammar as well as elective courses such as Language Development, American Language and Culture, Contemporary Topics, and Pronunciation for a total of 21 study hours each week. Students will also have opportunities for cultural experiences and campus activities.
Tuition and Fees
IELI 8-week academic program $2,000 Books and materials Fee $250 Institutional Fees $75 Health Insurance $375 Insurance cost varies each session.
Admissions
The TOEFL, IELTS, or other proficiency exams are not required for admission into the IELI program. Students will take an institutional placement exam to determine which level of study (1-7).
A TOEFL waiver to the University of Texas at Tyler is available for those students completing level 6 with all As or level 7 with at least all Bs. TOEFL or IELTS exam are not required.
Short-term study options are also available as well as seminars in various English Language Development topics such as Business English, English for Healthcare Professionals, English for Engineers, Travel and Tourism, and English for Teachers.

English Teacher Training
The English Teacher Training course at the University of Texas at Tyler Intensive English Language Institute is a 4-week intensive professional development course for English language teachers. The goal of this course is to provide students with an opportunity to develop their communicative competence in English while expanding their language teaching skills.
Students are integrated into the core language courses (Listening/Speaking, Reading and Writing) to give them optimal opportunities for cross-cultural interaction with other students in the program. In addition, two specialty courses are offered: TESL Methodology, and Language and Culture which explore current theories and practices in language teaching, the connection between language and culture, and allow students opportunities for hands-on practice. Students will also participate in campus and community events.
