The University of North Carolina at Charlotte's campus is located on a 400-hectare tract of rolling hills, forests and streams at the edge of Charlotte, providing pleasant surroundings with the convenience of a major city. Charlotte, part of a growing metropolitan area of approximately 1.3 million people, lies about midway between Atlanta, Georgia, and Richmond, Virginia, within a day's drive of Washington, D.C. The city offers many cultural activities such as art galleries and a natural science museum, as well as professional sports. It has a mild climate with sunshine an average of 233 days a year and light snow two or three times during the winter. Both the Atlantic Ocean and the Appalachian Mountains are about three hours away by car.

English Language Training Institute

Description

ELTI's fall and spring semesters are 13 weeks long. The summer semester is 11 weeks long. Students attend classes 20 hours per week fall and spring, 23 hours per week during the summer. The optional TOEFL preparation course adds four hours per week. Levels: ELTI has eight levels of instruction, ranging from beginner to advanced. Level Eight is designed for students planning to attend graduate programs.

Student Services

The English Language Training Institute (ELTI), located on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, provides intensive English instruction for international students planning to attend U.S. American universities or colleges as well as for those pursuing professional training in the United States. Established in 1978, ELTI offers eight levels of English instruction in listening, speaking, reading, grammar and writing, in addition to many opportunities to learn about U.S. culture through social and educational activities. Advanced students may also receive instruction in TOEFL preparation, professional and academic research skills, and public speaking.

Additional Services

Students who meet all requirements for admission to UNC Charlotte except minimum TOEFL scores (500 undergraduate, 550 graduate) may receive conditional admission and attend ELTI until the TOEFL score has been achieved. Students who desire a conditional admission should send both the ELTI application and the UNC Charlotte application to the ELTI Office.
