The University of Pittsburgh is located in the Oakland district of Pittsburgh, which is the city's cultural, educational, and medical center. Pittsburgh is a city of 600,000 and offers the advantages of a large city combined with the friendliness and sense of community of a small town. It is within easy traveling distance of Niagara Falls (4 hours by car), Washington, D.C. (5 hours by car), and New York City, Philadelphia, and Chicago (6-8 hours by car).
14-week programs begin in late August, early January, and early May. The ELI has three levels of instruction: Low Intermediate, High Intermediate and Advanced. In July, 2003, we will offer a 5-week Language and Culture Program. The ELI also offers special 5-week pre-professional programs. In July, 2003, we will offer the Public and International Affairs English Program (beginning July 7). This program is for advanced students only (TOEFL approximately 550). All programs include 20 hours per week of instruction.
Most students live in apartments near the campus or in neighboring areas. (Students are able to ride city buses for free with their Univ. of Pittsburgh ID.)
