The English Language and Culture Academy (ELCA) is an ESL program at Johnson & Wales University (JWU) in Providence, Rhode Island, USA. The program provides instruction in reading, grammar, oral communication and writing to help students build their English language proficiency skills for academic and professional communication.
JWU’s ELCA ESL program is committed to helping international students succeed in an American educational environment. The program has graduated approximately 1,000 students from regions around the world, including Asia/Southeast Asia, the Middle East, South America, Europe and North Africa. The ESL program is offered at both the undergraduate and graduate levels at JWU’s campus in Providence, Rhode Island. The program is housed within JWU Global (global.jwu.edu), which provides the resources and support necessary to build English language proficiency for academic purposes.
International students and scholars enrolled in JWU’s ESL program are supported by these services:
• Comprehensive immigration, arrival, academic
services, campus life and and housing options on and off campus
• Programming for adjustment to college life and
the culture of the United States
• Campus community engagement through
programming, activities, events and regional excursions
• English language instruction for academic purposes
in support of matriculation to a JWU academic degree program or degree programs at other institutions in the southern New England region.
To determine enrollment in JWU’s ESL program, international students and scholars may submit an English language proficiency exam score with their application.
JWU provides English language proficiency exam services upon students’ arrival that assist with placing students into a beginner, intermediate or advanced level program.

JWU offers a variety of living options, including halls with private or common bathrooms, suites and apartment-style units.
Depending on the hall, occupancy in each suite or apartment-style unit ranges from one to six residents.
Each building offers something uniquely different to meet the needs of every resident.
